The article is characterised by investigation of selected works in this scientific field, which makes the research relevant and illustrative. This work provides chronological review of publications which used different methodologies of natural zoning and varied geocomponents as a leading factor of drawing geographical zones. Chronological overview of the works gives an opportunity to see how scientific knowledge has been accumulating and transforming over time. Besides the analysis of the experience of physical-geographical zoning of Western Siberia, another characteristics of this research is that it presents works on zoning of separate parts of the plain (Tomsk region and Tyumen region), which enables us to investigate more deeply this topic. In the author's opinion, all scientific works of this field can be divided into three main groups: works of the pre-revolutionary, Soviet and Russian periods. Time of the works determines their aims and methods. The result of the research is a historical overview of works on physical-geographical zoning of the West Siberian Plain as well as identification of problems that people faced while zoning. Some of those problems can be mentioned: the lack of a unified methodology of physical-geographical zoning, insufficient equipment for registration of quantitative and qualitative changes in the environment, and special natural features, such as swamps, plains, development of natural regions, etc. | |
