While permanent settlements are located at higher elevations, numerous seasonal sites spread in the river valley experienced periodical flooding and were used for summer pasture. In order to better understand the settlement structure and land use of the region during this period, we investigate the question of identifying permanent vs. temporary settlements. This is done for the Tulva River basin by topographical analysis using GIS. The proposed model includes flood data based on long-term hydrological observations and the data on the intensity of vertical deformation of the river channels. The total values of these parameters give a probabilistic idea of the seasonally flooded territory. To check the obtained data for accuracy, we compared the results of our model with medium and high-resolution satellite imagery taken on the dates associated with the strongest known floods. | |
